ELECTRICAL STIMULATION THERAPY
Electrical stimulation has emerged as a valuable tool in pediatric physical therapy, offering non-invasive enhancement of muscle activation, strength, and motor control. At Therapy Kare, we utilize two distinct modalities: Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES) and Spinal Stimulation, each tailored to address specific needs within the pediatric population.
Functional Electrical Stimulation
Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES) stands out as a versatile treatment method aimed at improving muscle strength, coordination, endurance, and sensory feedback through functional tasks.
With a compact electrical stimulation unit, adhesive electrodes, and a manually controlled switch, FES optimizes muscle contraction through precise timing of low-level electrical impulses. This targeted approach proves beneficial for children with a variety of diagnoses, including Spina Bifida, Cerebral Palsy, Clubfoot (Talipes Equinovarus), Brachial Plexus Injury, and various other congenital or acquired muscle/nerve injuries.
Spinal Stimulation
Spinal Stimulation represents a specialized protocol designed specifically for children diagnosed with Spina Bifida. Under the guidance of Dylan Bryce, PT, DPT, who has completed training with Gerti Motavelli, PT, this method is implemented with precision and care.
Spinal stimulation is utilized with children aged 3 months to 13 years, with early initiation recommended to capitalize on heightened neuroplasticity during infancy and toddlerhood. This treatment modality involves the strategic placement of electrodes over the spinal cord and on the feet to stimulate affected muscles, similar to natural nerve impulses. Beyond enhancing muscle function, Spinal Stimulation offers a host of additional benefits, including increased circulation, sensation, strength/mobility, and urinary/fecal continence.
